Communications Officer – 6-month contract

Location: Sydney, New South Wales

We are seeking a suitably experienced Communications professional who is passionate about the role effective communication can play in the promotion of events, programs and general services a membership organisation can provide to its members.

Reporting to the State Manager - NSW the Communications Officer is an integral part of the NSW Chapter team, responsible for performing duties associated with the promotion of membership, partnerships, the Chapter program and of the Institute itself.

The role is a full time 6-month contract position with a possibility of transitioning to permanent and is based in Potts Point.

Key responsibilities

  • Producing and publishing content across all NSW Chapter digital channels, including e-newsletters, websites and social media
  • Developing the Chapter’s social media presence
  • Providing communications support for all NSW Chapter activities
  • Implementing media engagement strategies
  • Liaising with Chapter Committees/taskforces
  • Providing miscellaneous support as required for delivering the Chapter’s programs.

Ideal candidate

To be successful in this role, you will have tertiary qualifications in communications, journalism or public relations with a minimum of 3 years relevant experience.

You will have strong written and visual skills, demonstrated ability to work autonomously and flexibly as part of a multi-disciplinary team, proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and highly developed organisation skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.

Non-Executive and Independent Board Director

Part time for one year minimum with annual re-election to a maximum of six years


Independent Director with finance, accounting and audit expertise. CPA and at least 5 years partner / executive experience.

Knowledge / expertise in the Insurance industry would be valued but not essential.

The director role requires attending approximately 10 board meetings each year and serving on at least one board committee.  Some interstate travel is anticipated.  The role may require attendance in monthly conference calls for management/financial reporting and general compliance issues.

The successful candidate will be expected to Chair the board’s Finance, Audit, Risk and Investment Committee. In addition, the Institute also has two subsidiaries, IBL Limited and Architecture Media. The successful candidate may be asked to serve on the boards of these organisations.

Position purpose

The primary role of the Board of Directors of the Organisation is to enhance long term viability by:

  1. selecting and maintaining the position of Chief Executive Officer,
  2. establishing and reviewing the strategies and goals of the organisation, and
  3. overseeing the business and affairs of the organisation in light of emerging risks and opportunities. 

The Board establishes the strategic direction, supports the CEO, reports to the membership and stakeholders at the Annual General Meeting (AGM), assesses its own effectiveness and is ultimately responsible for ensuring the organisation remains viable and effective in the present and for the future.


The Independent Director role is remunerated in accordance with current Institute policy: $16,000 per annum plus $9,000 for committee chair responsibilities.
